MGM merge over an intertitle
According to Scott Eyman, in Lion of Hollywood: Life and Legend of Louis B. Mayer (NY, 2005), the Metro, Goldwyn and Mayer merger happened over an intertitle. The story goes thus:
On May 16, 1924, Thalberg was sitting in a story conference with Fred Niblo and a couple of other people. The subject at hand was a dialogue title: “I am in a mood for dalliance.”
A buzzer on Thalberg’s desk went off. Thalberg disappeared nto Mayer’s office. He was gone a long time, then came back and stood in the door. “Ladies and gentlemen,” he announced, “I have the pleasure to announce to you that the merger is now an accomplished fact.
“I think we’ll do no more work today. I find myself in a mood for dalliance.” (p.79)
