Another tiny snippet of information on this elusive title writer (she wrote the titles for The Mysterious Lady (1928), of course!). How interesting that she was a friend of Dreiser’s; his novel, Sister Carrie (1900), seems to collect together so many of the themes of ‘modern life’ that make their way into these films… And yet Lawson was unable to adapt a successful talkie screenplay from it.

note for Chapter 3 of The Final Victim of the Blacklist: John Howard Lawson, Dean of the Hollywood Ten, by Gerald Horne. It's a shame the Bodleian doesn't have Buhle and Wagner's book!
